Where is Uenohara??

Right on the edge of Yamanashi Prefecture,Uenohara is located on the way to Mt.Fuji from Tokyo.

How can we get to Uenohara?

We recommend using the JR Chuo train line to access all that Uenohara has to offer. The JR station functions as both bus and train station for the city. The station is the main hub for catching buses and taxis to various hiking trails and other points of interest in the area.If you have a car, however, you can access our town using the Chuo Expressway.

What can we eat??

Sake-manju is a part of Uenohara’s history. There is a famous road called the Kōshū Kaidō .It was once crowded with merchants in the Edo period (1603-1868 CE) and sake-manju has been enjoyed by residents and visitors since then.Manju is a Japanese style bun stuffed with red bean paste .This manju is special because it is flavored with sake. There are 10 sake-manju shops in Uenohara.A short walk from the Shinmachi [新町] bus stop will take you to these shops.

In addition, Seidanotamaji is another of Uenohara’s famous traditional foods. It is famous as a food of longevity.Seidanotamaji is made with small potatoes boiled with suger and miso.In the past, a famine afflicted much of Japan, including Uenohara. During this time, Seidayuu nakai spread potatoes to help people. So as not to waste anything, people used both normal size potatoes and also small ones. This small change was the start of this famous food! The people named the dish Seidanotamaji after Seidayuu nakai. The food is so popular there is even a character based on it! His name is Tamajimaru and he is a big hit with local children! If you’re lucky you might meet him at a festival in Uenohara!

What can we see??

We recommend visiting the Katsura Tree in the Gundari Shrine. Many people visit the shrine to pray for upcoming competitions, examinations, love and any other challenges! You can see a lot of wooden sword carvings in the area, and if you walk a little past the shrine you will find the massive Katsura Tree. The tree is a sacred place and is a natural monument of Yamanashi prefecture. It’s also bigger than any other trees of this type in Yamanashi prefecture! The peaceful nature surrounding it will refresh your body and mind. The Gundari Shrine is accessible from the Ido [井戸] bus stop.

What events can we attend?

Every September Uenhoara holds the Ushikura Fetsival. This event runs for three days and the whole city comes to life!On the first day of the event many portable shrines are carried by people all around the city. These Mikoshis are massive, ornate platforms that take 20 to 30 people to carry, so the sight of so many of them being carted around the city is something to behold! At night, the main road, Route 20, is closed to allow all of the portable shrines to gather in the city center. It’s not just locals that look forward to joining this event! The streets are thronged with people from all over as they watch or join in with the festivities. Everyone is welcome, so be sure to stop in and watch the Mikoshis and their cheering, dancing carriers!

You can take a peek at one of the festivals in this video:

On the second day, many festival stalls are set up. These festival markets are called a “Demise”.At the Demise you can enjoy a lot of staple festival foods and activities. Yakisoba, kakigori, goldfish scooping and games of chance… you’ll get a chance to try out all the traditional Japanese festivities here! This is a great chance to soak up the festival atmosphere while you stroll around town. The Ushikura Shrine is about a 15 minute walk from Uenohara Station.
